CUI Earns First-Ever Wins at STUNT National Tournament

SHAWNEE, Okla. - The Concordia University Irvine STUNT team competed in the STUNT National Championship tournament for the first time in program history this past weekend and the Eagles rose to the occasion. CUI earned two wins during the trip to Oklahoma, and clearly proved that the Eagles can measure up with other top-notch programs under the national spotlight.

The two-day tournament featured the top six teams in the nation in Division 1 and Division 2 STUNT. The Eagles locked in as the fifth overall seed in the tournament.

The seeding in the tournament was as follows:

#1 - California Baptist University (12-0)

#2 - Oklahoma Baptist University (5-1)

#3 - Maryville University (5-1)

#4 - Dallas Baptist University (4-2)

#5 - Concordia University (3-5)

#6 - Davenport University (dropped out)

Originally, the Eagles were slated as the No. 6 seed and were to open up the tournament against the No. 3 seed Saints of Maryville University, However, the Eagles and Saints matchup was cancelled due to Davenport University pulling out of the tournament. The bracket was reshuffled and the Eagles instead opened competition against Dallas Baptist University.

Match #1 – No. 4 seed DBU vs No. 5 seed CUI

The Eagles came out of the gate with fire power outscoring DBU 4-0 in the first quarter. In quarter number 2 the green and gold showed their talent limiting the Patriots to only one point going into halftime. The Eagles were on top 8-1 going into the third quarter. Looking to finish out the match strong, CUI maintained and extended their lead going into the final quarter up 11-2. In the fourth quarter the green and gold took all six points in the first two of three routines. After a forfeit of level 7 by Dallas Baptist, the Eagles received one additional point out of three in the final routine to put an end to the first match soundly defeating DBU by a final score of 18-2. High level performances by senior flyer Kayce De Leon and senior flyer Brandi Agans pyramid stunt group were key in the dominant performance against the Patriots. This was the Eagles first win in program history at nationals and their first match and win in program history against DBU. The victory meant that CUI would face undefeated CBU in their second matchup of the afternoon.

Match #2 – No. 1 CBU vs No. 5 CUI

The matchup speaks for itself. These two teams know each other very well and played each other three times this season. CBU came into this one with not only the top seed in the tournament, but also a regular season undefeated record. While the Eagles knew it was going to be a battle throughout the whole game, they persevered through the whole match and never gave up. Head coach Karli Shutt did something that has never been done in CUI STUNT history. The Eagles threw level 8, the highest level in collegiate STUNT. The ability to compete at such a high level with CBU showed how much fight the green and gold had throughout the match. CBU opened up the match outscoring the Eagles 8-0 going into halftime. CBU kept the pressure on the Eagles as they limited Shutt's team to only two points in the entire match and recorded a perfect 21 point score. The Eagles fell to the Lancers by the final score of 21-2. The Eagles would face the winner of DBU and Maryville on Saturday morning for a chance to compete in the semifinal.

Match #3 – No. 3 Maryville vs No. 5 CUI

After Maryville's narrow defeat of DBU, the Saints were set to take on your Concordia Eagles at the break of dawn Pacific Time. The Eagles, regrouping after their loss to CBU came out and dominated in the first two quarters against Maryville. The green and gold took all 8 points through the first two quarters and had the lead at half time 8-0. In the jumps and tumbling quarter or quarter number 3, the Eagles continued to be dynamic in their performance stealing almost all four points in that quarter as well. There was a potential shutout brewing in Oklahoma as the Eagles were leading 11-0 after three quarters. Standout performances by Senior tumbler Joanna Rivers and Junior tumbler Carmen Karg were crucial in the Eagles dominant performance. Shutt saw the opportunity for this and kept the momentum going securing all nine possible points in the fourth quarter. The Saints were able to tie one point to avoid the shutout, but the Eagles made a statement bouncing back from their loss to CBU defeating Maryville by the final score of 20-1. This was the Eagles first matchup and win in program history against Maryville. Concordia advanced to the National Championship semifinal.

Match #4 - Semifinal – No. 2 seed OBU vs No. 5 seed CUI

As if the weekend for CUI was not already a tournament of firsts, the Eagles had a date in the semifinal game taking on No. 2 OBU. This is the first match up between the Bison in program history and Concordia was looking to keep their momentum going throughout the semifinal. The Bison took all four points in the first quarter and while giving up two points to the Eagles, OBU would expand their 4 point lead to five heading into halftime up 7-2. The Green and Gold fought to stay in this match up, but fell behind 9-3 at the end of the third quarter. The six-point deficit is not a tough task to overcome as there are a total of nine points up for grabs in the final quarter. Knowing the tricks that Head Coach Karli Shutt has up her sleeve, the Eagles knew that they could be right back in this stealing the majority of the points. Unfortunately, the Bison had the final say taking seven of the nine total points and defeating your Eagles by the final score of 16-4.

Although CUI lost in the semifinal this weekend was extremely successful. Not only were your Eagles the lowest seed in the tournament after Davenport dropped out, but they were also the only team in the tournament with a sub .500 regular season record. The Eagles proved that no task was too big for them, taking down the third and fourth ranked teams in the nation and clinching the number one overall team in the nation in Division II STUNT. The Eagles will regroup and look forward to building on these great accomplishments in the years to come.
