SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Concordia University Irvine women's lacrosse team kicked off the season in the Santa Barbara Shootout and had a dominate performance going 3-1.
The regular season opener was on Friday against Pacific Lutheran. Senior
Trinity White led the Golden Eagles with five goals while three freshman performed at their best.
Riley Finch had four goals and one assist,
Jessi Borton contributed with two goals and one assist, and
Alex Strauch had one goal and assist. CUI finished the game with a final score 12-3.
The Golden Eagles had a double header day on Saturday playing against Sonoma State and Stanford. Freshman Finch had a stellar performance with seven goals. White and Borton both added three goals a-piece and White helped along the way twice. Strauch reached the back of the net twice while
Genevieve Maczko and
Erica Spohr had one each. Freshman goalie
Darby McGregor had 18 saves throughout the game to hold Sonoma State to only five goals for a 17-5 victory.
In the second game of the day Strauch, White, and Borton had two goals each.
Melinda Ibanez threw one in the back of the net to help the Golden Eagles reach their score 7-17.
CUI played against San Jose State in the final game of the tournament and came out with a demanding win 12-2. Finch and White led the Green and Gold both reaching five goals. Spohr and Borton both earned one goal during the game.
Maczko and Strauch helped win possessions with draw controls while Borton helped control the midfield with ground balls. Freshman goalie McGregor was a key contributor to the three wins over the weekend as she picked up 37 saves and three wins.
CUI will start conference play on the road Saturday, Feb. 18 at 11 a.m. down the street as they take on UC Irvine.
