IRVINE, Calif. - A hot streak on the diamond and the tennis courts helped Concordia University Irvine softball and women's tennis both earn PacWest Team of the Week honors.
Both enter this Wednesday boasting six-game winning streaks and fantastic home records.
The CUI softball squad has been nationally-ranked this entire season in the NFCA DII Coaches Poll and rose from No. 12 to No. 8 on Tuesday in the latest weekly poll. The Golden Eagles went 4-0 with
two non-conference wins at home over Pace University last Monday followed by
two hard-fought narrow victories over their rivals from Biola.
Shelby Pfeiler and
Rylie Rohr each crushed a home run against Pace while
Mary Baccay provided the game-winning RBI in one of the road wins in La Mirada. The CUI pitching staff was superb, allowing only five total runs. This included five scoreless innings from
Rae Flores and superb work by
Daniela Alvarez in the circle to close out the Saturday sweep of Biola.
On the tennis courts, the doubles pairing of
Tiffany Carrillo and
Jessica Bear combined for three wins together this past week. In doing so, CUI won the doubles point in all three matches.
That proved to be huge in the most recent win,
a 4-3 decision over Point Loma.
Alyssa Zayat wound up clinching the match with a win at No. 4 singles after
Heather Richards and Carrillo had also secured victories. It was also Zayat's second win of the week.
CUI walloped MSU Morehead 7-0 and then fended off Hawai'i Hilo 4-2 in Irvine.
Alicia Da Re cemented the victory with a 7-5, 6-2 decision at No. 6 singles to help the Green and Gold prevail against the Vulcans.
CUI tennis heads to Cal State LA on Thursday (weather permitting). The CUI softball squad will visit nationally-ranked Cal State San Marcos on Friday, March 31 for their next doubleheader.
