Golden Eagles Bring Depth To The Wyatt Balman Invitational

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. - The men's and women's swim teams had a good showing at their final tune-up before their big mid-season meet in two weeks.  Both the men and women won the Wyatt Balman Invitational hosted by Soka University on Saturday.  The men held on to defeat The Master's University 670.5 to 660.5.  Arizona Christian, Simpson and Soka rounded out the top-5.  The women rallied to defeat APU and Master's.  The Golden Eagles tallied 584 points, to the Cougars' 562 and Mustangs 397.

CUI grabbed victories in the 100 breast (Alex Leland), 200 back (Aubrie Carver), 200 breast (Ellie Hardey) and 3m Diving (Chloe Dobie) on the women's side.  They also grabbed a win in the closing 200 free relay as Rachel Maki, Hannah Edwards, Alex, and Alice Stainer came away victorious.

The men's wins came in the 50 free (Jayden Hernandez), 200 breast (Hunter May) and 200 back (Jackson Rosol).

Some notable swims were turned in by Alex Canales (200 free, 2nd), Alice (200-500 free, both 2nd), Tommy Kelly (100 back, 2nd), Naomi Nakaya (200 fly, 2nd), Logan Irvine (200 fly, 2nd), and Elena Argabright (1000 free, 2nd).

The Golden Eagles showed a lot of depth in two events in particular. Aubrie, Carissa Ward, Noelle Landon, Elena Argabright, and Aliyah Treadwell grabbed the top-5 spots in the 200 back and Ellie, Alex, Brinkley Hallgren, Julia Smirnoff, and Rachel Gardner went 1-2-4-5-6 in the 200 breaststroke.

"This was a decent showing for us," said CUI head coach Bert Bergen. "We've not backed off on heaving training and good teams find ways to be successful while being sore and tired.  Winning is always nice, but we are hoping to manage frustrations and learn from some mistakes made today and be better in two weeks.  They are in a good place overall, but sometimes let little things get to them.  We are getting there!"

The LaVerne Invitational is on November 22-24 at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park.  This is a very competitive swim and dive meet and the Golden Eagles expect to have a great wrap up to the first half of the season.
