Wrapping it up in Washington

SEATTLE, Wash.- Most of the CUI track and field team wrapped up its indoor seasons on Saturday at the University of Washington. With two events still sitting in national-appearance range, the team, coaches, and fans will sit on the edge of their seats until the rankings freeze at midnight on Sunday the 25th of February.

This weekend on the men's side, freshman Trey Vergenz celebrated his fifth meet as a Golden Eagle with a five-centimeter PR in the shot put to 15.81m. His teammate, Hunter Hornaday, also had another consistent performance in the shot with a 14.20m throw (only three cm under his indoor PR). On the track, the men debuted a 4,000m distance medley relay of Lucas Grunden, Donovan Wilson, Bryce Tondryk, and Noah Plaza who opened with an impressive 10:10.55 but came up a mere six seconds short of the school record they were chasing.

Donovan Wilson finished out his career as a Golden Eagle with his leg in the DMR. The graduate student competed for CUI for 3 seasons (indoor '23, outdoor '23, and indoor '24) before he ran out of NCAA eligibility. Wilson will wrap up his master's degree in coaching and athletics administration in May.

On the women's side, the four ladies who blew the old DMR record out of the water a few weeks ago in Michigan got another chance to run the event. Porshe Eismann, Maria Sartin, Bethany Schmidt, and Jori Paradis ran only a few seconds slower than their performance a few weeks ago for a consistent showing this season. The group currently sits 9th in DII which is right on the edge of the top 12 teams that make it to the NCAA DII indoor championships. They will patiently await the final TFRRS rankings on Sunday night, then the accepted and declared rankings lists that will follow from the NCAA.

Junior Dylan Fox, who did not compete this weekend, currently sits at number 8 in the DII nation in the long jump. The NCAA guarantees entry to the top sixteen declared athletes in each individual event, so the team expects Fox to punch his ticket to Pittsburgh, Kansas in the next few days as well.

The rest of the team will continue their outdoor seasons in Fullerton, Calif the same weekend as Nationals on March 8th and 9th.
