IRVINE, Calif. - Tuesday was a historic night for the Concordia University Irvine stunt team as the program competed for the first time as a NCAA DII-sponsored sport.
Concordia earned the first point of the DII era right away in its home opener against Hope International University. The teams traded points in the first quarter and were in a 2-2 deadlock entering the second quarter. Â
The Golden Eagles rallied from a 6-2 halftime deficit to pull within one after outscoring the Royals 3-0 in the third quarter. Â
With HIU holding a slim 6-5 lead entering the fourth and final period, both teams tried their best to claim as many points as possible down the stretch.
CUI looked strong in many areas including the tumbling routines. Ultimately, Hope International was able to stave off a comeback by the home team to secure a 14-8 victory.
Even though Concordia did not earn the win, the energy from both the fans and the sidelines made for an exciting and fun atmosphere on a historic night.
"It was really awesome to go out there in front of a full house in the stands for our first game as a NCAA DII stunt team," said senior
Madelyn Almodovar. "I feel like we put our hearts out there and it was great opportunity for our freshmen and for all of us."
"HIU came out really strong this season and it was a tough loss but we learned so much as team," said CUI head coach
Karli Shutt. "We're excited and eager to get back into the gym in preparation for our upcoming tournament at DBU.
"Despite the outcome there were so many successes that deserve celebration and it's only up from here," added Shutt. "I'm so grateful for my coaching staff, all of my assistants coached their first ever college stunt game tonight. I'm so proud of this team and can't wait to get back on the mat!"
Concordia will head to Texas for multiple matches next weekend. The next home CUI stunt match will be on Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in Irvine.
