IRVINE, Calif. - A pair of standout Concordia women's track and field student-athletes set school records this past weekend at the Ron Kamaka Open hosted by Mt. Sac.
Addison Barker made history with a fantastic showing in the pole vault. Barker cleared her personal-best height of 3.50 meters to finish third overall on the day and etch her name in the CUI record books.
Julia Pisenti tossed her javelin a record 44.63 meters on Saturday to finish in first place ahead of CUI teammate
Whitney Griffith (39.96 meters). In the process of that great outing, Pisenti also claimed the new top mark in the Concordia record books for that event. Pisenti also won the women's discus throw and Griffith was a solid second there as well.
Jasmyn Rios had a special day as she won the women's shot put with a mark of 13.05 meters. Rios was also fourth in the discus, giving Concordia actually three of the top four women in that event.Â
On the track,
Kailyn Krebs was second in the 400 hurdles,
Zakiya Nunez took third in the 400 meter dash. Another highlight came in the women's 3,000 meter when distance runner and PacWest All-Conference cross country star
Ania Kapustka crossed the line first to beat Alyssa Lovett from the Master's by less than one second down the stretch!
Audrey Barcenas placed fourth in that long race as well.
Karlyn Schneider was the lone representative for Concordia on Thursday and Friday at Mt. Sac and finished sixth out of 13 competitors in the women's heptathlon. Her best event was the long jump, where she took second place behind teammate
Riley Norris who competed unattached on this day. Schneider racked up 3,290 points and was also Top Five in the high jump, javelin and 200 meter dash.
On the men's side, SAAC Vice President and team representative
Trey Vergenz shined in the men's discus, winning that event and narrowly besting CUI sophomore
Tim Weller who was right behind him. Vergenz finished second overall in the hammer throw too and was the top mark among affiliated participants (second behind only the unattached Jeremy Tan). CUI teammate
Mark Lutke was right behind Vergenz in third place in the shot put.
Weller had a breakthrough meet and excelled in the shot put. He won that event with a mark of 14.83 meters while
Jayden Legaspi placed third. Meanwhile,
Max Castin was second in the men's high jump.Â
