IRVINE, Calif. – For the third time in four years, the Concordia University Irvine women's tennis team is heading to the NCAA DII West Regional tournament.
CUI learned Monday evening that it is the No. 4 seed and will get a rematch with top-seeded Academy of Art this Friday, May 10.
Point Loma and Azusa Pacific are on the other side of the bracket. The winners of those two matches will represent the PacWest Conference and the West Region as two of 16 teams remaining on the national stage.
CUI tangled with the Urban Knights earlier this season on one occasion. The teams each earned three points in singles play, with freshmen
Emilie Lugon-Moulin and
Bryn Johnson as well as junior
Alicia Da Re each taking care of business.
However, ART U won the doubles point by narrow 6-4 margins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, and ultimately
that doubles point was the deciding factor in a 4-3 ART U win.
The Golden Eagles are 16-6 overall and are 16-3 against any school not named Azusa Pacific this season. CUI has also gone an outstanding 22-2 at home over the past two seasons.
In singles, Lugon-Moulin and
Sophie Rachor were both named
First Team All-Conference selections by coaches in the PacWest.
Tiffany Carrillo and Rachor were also voted Second Team All-Conference in doubles and Johnson and Lugon-Moulin together were also Third Team All-Conference.
CUI finished fourth at the PacWest Conference Championships and projected as either a No. 3 or No. 4 seed over the past two months. Earlier this spring, the CUI women rattled off nine consecutive victories - which included a big win over regional participant Point Loma.
